On April 22, 2013 the state of Colorado passed bill SB226, The Dog Protection Act, which requires police officers in that state to have mandatory training in dog behavior and prohibit police from using deadly force against family dogs as a first response. Since 2007, more than 30 dogs have been killed by Colorado officers, many of whom had no history of aggressive behavior or showed signs of aggression towards officers prior to being killed. The bill also allows a dog’s guardian to control their dog and take it to a safe place before speaking with police.

This is the nation’s first legislation of this nature. The bill is currently on its way to Governor John Hickenlooper for his signature.
