Meet Your 2011 Willamette Cover Model ~ Penny Love
For a “monstrously” good time, head to Slocum Orthopedics in Eugene for its 5th annual Monster Mash Oct. 30. The 5K run and 5-K9 run/walk takes place on a scenic, flat course along the Willamette River through Alton Baker Park, and across the DeFazio Foot Bridge.
The September event roster traditionally boasts numerous Oktoberfest celebrations. A perennial favorite for animal lovers is DOGtoberfest, a street festival featuring live bands, brew, and the fun of Portland’s biggest dog wash, all in the streets around the Lucky Lab Brew Pub, at 915 SE Hawthorne in Portland. The fun runs 11am-5pm Saturday, Sept. 24; all proceeds benefit the DoveLewis Blood Bank, one of the largest volunteer-based blood banks in the nation.
Rose City Veterinary Hospital will host its 100th birthday celebration Sunday, July 24, noon-4, at the clinic in SE Portland. The festivities, including refreshments, games, prizes, and more, will provide fun for the whole family, and all are invited to attend.
Several nonprofits with whom Rose City works will help celebrate. The Oregon Humane Society will have adoptable dogs on site and The Portland Animal Welfare (PAW) Team will be in attendance
This centennial is not only a landmark for Portland’s first veterinary hospital, but honors an interesting time in Portland’s history.
The conditions of spring and summer promote the growth of harmful algae blooms in lakes and other standing bodies of water.
Waters affected by blooms — which often look like scum or foam and not actual “blooms” — pose a serious risk to dogs, and in fact have taken canine lives in the Northwest every year since the first reported case in 2009.
It’s time for Boutiques Unleashed!
It’s an evening of great fashion, fun and hilarity, and all for a good cause. Pets and pet people turn out in droves for DoveLewis’ annual fashion gala, Boutiques Unleashed.
Every spring, hip pets and people take to the runway in the latest styles from Portland-area animal and human boutiques in support of the DoveLewis Pet Loss Support Program — celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The event happens Friday, April 1, at the beautiful Tiffany Center in downtown Portland.
In the tough competition this year, it was a pleasure to see new faces shine through the crowd. Parkway Veterinary Hospital is a clear favorite in the Northwest pet community — voted Top Dog in multiple categories.
TOP DOG Oregon Humane Society
Winning last year’s Top Dog top prize as well, it’s been a successful year for the folks at Oregon Humane Society, who have boosted adoption rates and continued raising pet-adoption awareness around the world.
